North Dakotans Never Give Up - Larry Aasen

While Larry Aasen was growing up on a farm in North Dakota, he and the people of his state lived through a Great Depression, crop failures, floods, grasshopper infestations, a World War, snowstorms, bank failures, crop diseases, and severe weather extremes. If they were to survive, they couldn't give up.So Larry has written a book - part history, part memoir - that pays tribute to some North Dakotans whose determination made them successful in many fields, including farming, education, sports, war, politics, business, entertainment and journalism "North Dakotans Never Give Up" is also a memoir, because it gives a picture of life and times in North Dakota in the 1930s and 1940s.

Cover Image For North Dakota Postcards 1900-1930

North Dakota Postcards 1900-1930

From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of North Dakota showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available.

Cover Image For Border Boys by Christiansen

Border Boys by Christiansen

No football team from a western province had ever beaten a team from the East. But in Winnipeg, a former expat who had fallen in love with American college football believed he could bring a championship to the city. With national unity around the Canadian game in jeopardy, he hired American players, and together with their Canadian teammates these "border boys" sought gridiron glory at the highest level of the sport. This is their story. Border Boys is a book for football fans on both sides of an international border. American and Canadian fans alike will enjoy reading about how both games have a common origin and about how they have intersected and diverged throughout history. American fans will learn more about the evolution of college football, while Canadian fans will learn how football in the provinces evolved from an amateur to a professional sport. Fans in Winnipeg may be shocked to learn about the Americanization of the sport in their city, including at the University of Manitoba, and they will also enjoy rediscovering their team's first Grey Cup victory in 1935. College football fans in North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, South Dakota, and Wisconsin will learn how players from the "Swede Belt" just south of the Canadian border had a huge impact on the Canadian game. And North Dakota State University, Concordia College, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and University of North Dakota fans will understand how their schools impacted the development of football in the Red River Valley of the North—on both sides of the border.

Cover Image For The Nineties - Klosterman

The Nineties - Klosterman

It was long ago, but not as long as it seems: The Berlin Wall fell and the Twin Towers collapsed. In between, one presidential election was allegedly decided by Ross Perot while another was plausibly decided by Ralph Nader. In the beginning, almost every name and address was listed in a phone book, and everyone answered their landlines because you didn’t know who it was. By the end, exposing someone’s address was an act of emotional violence, and nobody picked up their new cell phone if they didn’t know who it was. The 90s brought about a revolution in the human condition we’re still groping to understand. Happily, Chuck Klosterman is more than up to the job.

Fargo Rock City - Klosterman

With a voice like Ace Frehley's guitar, Klosterman hacks his way through hair-band history, beginning with that fateful day in 1983 when his older brother brought home Mötley Crüe's Shout at the Devil. The fifth-grade Chuck wasn't quite ready to rock—his hair was too short and his farm was too quiet—but he still found a way to bang his nappy little head. Before the journey was over, he would slow-dance to Poison, sleep innocently beneath satanic pentagrams, lust for Lita Ford, and get ridiculously intellectual about Guns N' Roses. C'mon and feel his noize.

North Dakota Tough - Jeff Kolpack

Before Dave Osborn became one of the all-time great running backs with the Minnesota Vikings, he grew up on a farm near Cando, N.D., without electricity all the while riding his horse to school. Even in the middle of winter. For a decade in the 1970s, the once-proud University of North Dakota hockey team fell on hard times, until a group of physical, fierce players were recruited into the program. Before North Dakota State football rose to prominence in Division I FCS football, the Bison laid the foundation in the 1960s with a group of gritty young men. One had a pet snake in his campus dorm room. In the early 1970s, Steve Blehm set a legendary high school basketball standard in Devils Lake, N.D., averaging 47 points per game. He was deaf - and, a great outside shooter, he did it before the 3-point line. In the 2000s, wrestler Collin Larsen from Casselton, N.D., lost the lower half of his leg in a motorcycle accident in August. By January, he was back on the mat with his one good leg. From 1938-43, Ayr High School won 109 girls basketball games in a row. In the 1940s, Elbowoods High was declared the Class B state boys basketball champion, but it took 60 years before the school was officially recognized. Now the town is under 90 feet of Lake Sakakawea water, but school pride remains strong. Doug Simunic. Bill Sorensen. Randy Hedberg. Brad Gjermundson. Tony Satter. Drayton baseball. They all have stories that need to be preserved. These are not sports stories; these are character stories that helped define a state.

The Innocent Days of a North Dakota Farm Boy - Carmen Lee

The Innocent Days of a North Dakota Farm Boy By: Carmen James Lee

It was a time of innocence for author Carmen James Lee, growing up on a rural farm in North Dakota in the 1950s. In The Innocent Days of a North Dakota Farm Boy, he shares a nostalgic collection of stories telling about his experiences as a child during a much simpler time. In this memoir, he narrates how he walked in the fresh snow to milk the cows with a kerosene lantern in his hand, what it was like attending a one-room school, and how he sawed a huge hay stack in half with a rope made of barbwire. Recalling a fun-filled youth, Lee tells about his challenges, his dream, his successes, and his failures. The Innocent Days of a North Dakota Farm Boy shares real-life stories of a North Dakota boy growing up and experiencing these and many more fun and exciting things-from plowing with a tiny, two-bottom plow behind the Ford tractor to marching in the school band at the Indianapolis 500 car race.

Land In Her Own Name: Women as Homesteaders in North Dakota By: H. Elaine Lindgren

Land is often known by the names of past owners. "Emma's Land", "Gina's quarter", and "the Ingeborg Land" are reminders of the many women who homesteaded across North Dakota in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Land in Her Own Name records these homesteaders' experiences as revealed in interviews with surviving homesteaders and their families and friends, land records, letters, and diaries. These women's fascinating accounts tell of locating a claim, erecting a shelter, and living on the prairie. Their ethnic backgrounds include Yankee, Scandinavian, German, and German-Russian, as well as African-American, Jewish, and Lebanese. Some were barely twenty-one, while others had reached their sixties. A few lived on their land for life and "never borrowed a cent against it"; others sold or rented the land to start a small business or to provide money for education.
